  • The Rural Municipality of Harrison provides a clean, quiet and safe alternative to city life. Sandy Lake and Newdale (each with populations numbering under 500) are peaceful places with a strong sense of community and neighborly friendliness. An excellent choice whether you are raising a family or planning to retire.

The primary industry in the region is agriculture. The soil and climate are ideal for growing crops such as rye, wheat, oats, barley, canola and alfalfa. Livestock operations do well here.

Another industry which is continually growing is recreation and tourism. Numerous lakes in the area are prime fishing locations, either in summer or winter. Boating and swimming are widely enjoyed on Sandy Lake, as is spending some time on the quiet beach, tanning or having a family picnic. A nine hole golf course and campground sites are available. The TransCanada trail runs through Sandy Lake. An old CN rail line, this trail is used for activities like hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. During the winter, snowmobiling is quite popular as is ice fishing, cross-country skiing and curling. The area is also excellent for hunting both waterfowl and big game such as deer and elk.

    Future potential:

The municipality is centrally located with a small population and lots of room to grow. Much of the area is farmland making it a prime location for family farm livestock operations as well as organic grown crops and livestock.

Another trend in the area is the subdivision of farm lands to accomodate smaller parcels for residential homes. These homes in the country are ideal locations for families, retirees or home-based business enthusiasts. Thanks to the Internet and the ability to work out of home via computer, business people in cities can move to the country reaping all the benefits of a quieter, less stressful life. Tourism is growing in the area as the trend for quality of life increases. The village of Sandy Lake has subdivided a newer cottage area on Harrison Bay on the lake.

As you travel the Yellowhead Route you will come to the junction of #250 & #16. To those of you who have been here before, we look forward to seeing you again. To those of you who haven't turned North on #250 and visited us in Sandy-Lake, come and see why they keep coming back year after year.
